US personal lines insurer Allstate has introduced its usage-based insurance device, Drivewise, in additional six states across the US, to help identify and improve driving habits of policyholders by delivering constant feedback.

Available to customers in Missouri, Indiana, Minnesota, Maryland, Utah, and Washington, Drivewise will measures mileage, braking, speed, and driving time, enabling the company to calculate a discount for each customer using its telematics technology.

Allstate Senior Product vice president Ed Biemer said, ''We know Drivewise can create a safer, more self-aware driver and, it remains our goal to offer usage-based insurance to as many of our customers as possible so we can encourage safer driving and pass along a significant discount for it."

The company has also launched a usage-based insurance application to provide smart phone users with near real-time updates with each trip and easier access on the go.

Originally introduced in December 2010, Drivewise provides customers with an automatic 10% enrollment discount upon signing and after the first six months of use it is replaced with performance discount based on the demonstrated driving habits.

The system can be easily plugged into on-board diagnostic port of the car's dashboard/steering column by the customers, who can then go online or use new application to learn about their driving habits and how to become safe drivers.

The Cooperative of American Physicians (CAP) has partnered with specialty writer of professional liability insurance ProAssurance to provide a new liability protection product, CAPAssurance, to fulfill the needs of hospitals and other medical facilities in California.

CAP chief executive officer James Weidner said that the regional and community hospitals and other healthcare facilities operating in California are witnessing an increasing and expensive set of liabilities, requiring creative solutions.

Weidner pointed out that CAP, as a California-based physician organization with medical professional liability experience, understands that meeting these needs requires a partner with experience in writing hospitals and facilities.

"ProAssurance, an NYSE listed company with an 'A' rating and rock-solid balance sheet, meets all the qualifications we were looking for when we set out to establish this innovative partnership.

"The difference that CAPAssurance will bring to the hospital market is CAP's decades of understanding what individual physicians need to care for patients plus ProAssurance's ability to provide a broad range of risk-sharing options," Weidner added.

CAP MD, chair and president John Ingram said that as the nation's health care system aligns physicians and hospitals closely, each needs to anticipate how the other must respond to the options available in this new era of patient health.

"CAPAssurance will be able to speak the language of physicians and hospitals. We expect everyone to benefit from that joint experience," Ingram added.

Having patient safety as core value, CAPAssurance program offers the help of seasoned risk managers to work with hospital staff professionals to prevent claims from occurring.

Founded in 1975 by a group of California physicians, Cooperative of American Physicians manages the growing expense of medical professional liability coverage.

Based in Los Angeles, the company has also offices in San Diego, Orange County, Sacramento, and Palo Alto and delivers medical professional liability protection to physicians practicing in large groups through the Cooperative of American Physicians Insurance Company.

Operating as a specialty insurance company, ProAssurance specializes in medical professional liability, products liability for life sciences, and the medical technology industry and legal professional liability.

MetLife has added group accident insurance to its portfolio of supplemental health insurance products to help employers and their employees to meet challenges related with increasing healthcare costs.

The new insurance enables employers to provide additional protection to their employees to cover expenses such as deductibles, co-payments, and non-covered medical services that may arise in the event of an accident.

MetLife Voluntary & Worksite Benefits senior vice president Michael Fradkin said that a serious accident, or frequent doctor visits for sports-related injuries, can leave an employee with higher-than-expected expenses, and the employer with a financially-stressed worker.

"Accident insurance pays employees directly and the funds can be used in any way they want, so they can focus on recovery rather than financial concerns," Fradkin added.

The group accident insurance provides coverage for active employees of any age, their spouses and children aged up to 26, without a medical exam, no limits on the number of accidents covered and no waiting period for coverage to start.

"In addition to helping employees narrow financial gaps in medical insurance, voluntary supplemental health benefits enable employers to improve productivity, retain employees, and control benefits costs," Fradkin said.

Serving 90 million customers, MetLife through its subsidiaries and affiliates, caters to markets in the US, Japan, Latin America, Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
