Sun Life Financial has reported operating net income from continuing operations of $448m for the first quarter of 2013, compared to $437m during the comparable period last fiscal.

Reported net income from continuing operations stood at $410m, against $405m during the corresponding period earlier year.

The current quarter results reflect continued execution of its growth strategy, including product and distribution initiatives in recent quarters, and positive impact from investment activity and market factors, claims the company.

Operating earnings per share (EPS) from continuing operations was $0.75, compared to $0.74, while reported EPS from continuing operations was $0.68.

For the first three months ended on 31 March 2013, its operating net income (combined operations) decreased to $565m, compared to $727m during the year ago quarter.

Sun Life Financial Canada's reported net income was $277m for the first quarter, against $227m, while SFL US reported net income stood at $65m, compared to $144m, during the same period last year.

Sun Life Financial group of companies operate in Canada, the US, the UK, Ireland, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Japan, Indonesia, India, China, Australia, Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia and Bermuda. They had total assets under management of $571bn, as of 31 March 2013.

Genworth Financial has reported net income of $103m, or $0.21 per diluted share, compared to $46m, or $0.09 per diluted share, during the first quarter last year.

Net operating income was $151m, or $0.30 per diluted share, against $17m, or $0.03 per diluted share, during the comparable period earlier year.

Net investment losses, net of tax and other adjustments, stood at $28m compared to net investment gains of $17m during the same period a year ago.

Genworth Financial president and CEO Tom McInerney said that the company achieved several milestones in the first quarter of 2013, including progress on long term care premium rate increase plans, the sale of its wealth management business, execution of the US Mortgage Insurance capital plan on April 1.

US Life Insurance Division net operating income was $85m, compared to $64m during the corresponding period a year ago, mainly backed by favorable mortality experience across the life insurance, long term care insurance and fixed annuity product lines.

Global Mortgage Insurance Division had net operating income of $102m, compared to a net operating loss of $37m, while Corporate and Other Division net operating loss was $36m, compared to $10m in a year ago quarter.

Employing 5,840 staff, Genworth operates through three divisions including US Life Insurance, which includes life insurance, long term care insurance and fixed annuities, Global Mortgage Insurance, containing US Mortgage Insurance and International Mortgage Insurance segments and the Corporate and Other division.

American International Group (AIG) has reported net income attributable to the company of $2.2bn and after-tax operating income of $2bn for the first quarter of 2013, compared to $3.2bn and $3bn, respectively during the same period last year.

The prior-year first quarter net income included $3.3bn of pre-tax from investment in AIA Group (AIA), Maiden Lane II (ML II), and Maiden Lane III LLC (ML III) that were sold or liquidated in 2012.

Diluted earnings per share and after-tax operating income per share attributable to the underwriter were $1.49 and $1.34, compared to$1.71 and $1.62, respectively, during the first quarter of 2012.

AIG Property Casualty posted operating income of $1.6bn compared to $1bn during the same period earlier year, which reflects increases in both underwriting income and net investment income.

Life and Retirement operating income stood at $1.4bn, compared to $1.3bn, while United Guaranty Corporation (UGC), AIG's residential mortgage guaranty operations, reported operating income of $41m against $8m in the first quarter of 2012.

Other Operations including Mortgage Guaranty posted operating losses of $152m, versus operating income of $2.3bn during the corresponding period last fiscal.

Operating in more than 130 countries, AIG companies serve commercial, institutional, and individual customers through extensive worldwide property-casualty networks of insurer.
